The one sheet I wish I had in year one

When I started analysing fight markets, I kept a battered notebook with the same conversion grid scribbled on three different pages. Each one was slightly wrong. Once I committed a clean version to memory and stopped guessing, my pre-fight prep got two hours faster a week. That sheet is what this page is.

What follows is a reference for converting UFC odds between the three notations you actually need as a UK bettor: fractional (the British default), decimal (the European-and-multi standard), and implied probability (the maths that lets you compare any two lines without prejudice). No storytelling, no detours, no chapter on the history of bookmaker margins. Just the formulae, a worked set of 13 typical UFC lines, and the mental shortcuts that take a thirty-second calculation down to three seconds. Treat it as the reference page you bookmark and check on fight day, not the essay you read once and forget.

The three formulae you actually use

Fractional to decimal: take the fraction N/D and add 1. So 5/2 becomes (5÷2) + 1 = 3.50. 11/10 becomes (11÷10) + 1 = 2.10. 2/5 becomes (2÷5) + 1 = 1.40. The “+1” is the stake-back component, which fractional notation leaves implicit and decimal notation includes explicitly.

Decimal to implied probability: divide 1 by the decimal price, then multiply by 100. So 3.50 becomes (1÷3.50) × 100 = 28.6%. 2.10 becomes (1÷2.10) × 100 = 47.6%. 1.40 becomes (1÷1.40) × 100 = 71.4%. The implied probability is what the line says the chance of that outcome is, including the bookmaker’s margin.

Fractional to implied probability directly: D divided by (N+D), times 100. So 5/2 becomes 2÷(5+2) × 100 = 28.6%. Same answer, fewer steps. I use the direct fractional-to-implied formula nine times out of ten because it skips the decimal middle step.

About 53% of UFC bouts end inside the distance — KO/TKO 33.3%, submission 19.7% — so when you are converting a method-of-victory price into implied probability, you are checking whether the book’s number sits above or below the historical base rate. That is the entire point of the conversion exercise: comparing a quoted line to a meaningful reference.

The worked conversion set you will reuse all season

Here are 13 prices you will see on a UK UFC card across favourites, pickems and dogs, with all three notations side by side. Read across each row and memorise the shape.

1/4 → 1.25 decimal → 80% implied. 2/5 → 1.40 decimal → 71.4% implied. 4/7 → 1.57 decimal → 63.6% implied. 4/5 → 1.80 decimal → 55.6% implied. 10/11 → 1.91 decimal → 52.4% implied. Evs (1/1) → 2.00 decimal → 50% implied. 11/10 → 2.10 decimal → 47.6% implied. 5/4 → 2.25 decimal → 44.4% implied. 6/4 → 2.50 decimal → 40% implied. 2/1 → 3.00 decimal → 33.3% implied. 5/2 → 3.50 decimal → 28.6% implied. 4/1 → 5.00 decimal → 20% implied. 8/1 → 9.00 decimal → 11.1% implied.

Notice the inflection at 2.00 decimal / 50% implied — that is the pickem line, the watershed between favourite and underdog. Notice also that UFC favourites win in 65 to 70% of fights on a ten-year sample, which means the band between 4/7 and 4/5 (63.6% to 55.6% implied) is where most UFC main-event favourites get priced. That cluster is worth memorising. Most slips you read in fight week will sit in that band, and being able to see the shape of the price at a glance saves you opening a calculator every time.

Implied versus actual probability

The implied probability you calculate from a quoted line is not the true probability of the outcome. It includes the bookmaker’s overround — the margin baked into the two-way market that makes the percentages on both sides sum to more than 100%.

Take a UFC pickem priced at 10/11 on both fighters. Each side implies 52.4%. Together: 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the operator’s vig. The “true” probabilities, stripped of vig, are roughly 50% on each side — but you only know that because you subtracted the overround. On a heavy favourite line of 1/4 (80% implied) versus 3/1 (25% implied), the sum is 105% and the vig is 5%. Strip it out proportionally and the “true” numbers are roughly 76.2% and 23.8%.

The mental shortcut for stripping vig: divide each implied probability by the sum of all sides’ implied probabilities. So 80 ÷ 105 = 76.2%. And 25 ÷ 105 = 23.8%. The two new numbers now sum to exactly 100% and represent the model’s view without the bookmaker’s cut. This is the number you actually want to compare with your own probability estimate, not the raw implied figure on the slip.

Mental shortcuts for fight-night arithmetic

For the prices you see most often, memorise these anchors and interpolate the rest by eye:

Evs is 50%. 2/1 is 33%. 4/1 is 20%. 1/2 is 67%. 1/4 is 80%. 1/1 is 50%. 3/1 is 25%. Once you have those anchors, a UFC price of 5/2 (between 2/1 and 3/1) is roughly 28% — close enough to the precise 28.6% for any in-fight read. A price of 5/4 (between Evs and 6/4) is roughly 44% — the precise figure is 44.4%.

The “five-anchor” approach is what professional traders teach themselves before they go anywhere near a tool. It lets you walk through a UFC card on a Saturday night, glance at each fight, and assign a probability to every line without a single calculator tap. Once the anchors are wired in, the conversion stops being a maths task and starts being a reading task. Your eye does the work, not your phone.

When the conversion actually matters in practice

The conversion is non-trivial in three specific situations. First, when you are odds-shopping across UK operators in fight week and one site shows 5/2 while another shows 13/5 — those are different prices (28.6% vs 27.8% implied), and the conversion tells you which is sharper. Second, when you are checking whether a parlay’s combined decimal price reflects the true compounding of the legs versus a promotional boost. Third, when you are comparing an outright market quoted in fractional to a futures market quoted in decimal on the same fighter on a different operator. What the conversion sheet looks like in your phone

The version I carry is a single screenshot in my photos app, three columns, thirteen rows. Fractional, decimal, implied. That is the whole tool. I do not memorise the implied percentages to two decimal places; I memorise the rough shape. 5/2 is roughly 29%. 4/1 is exactly 20%. Evs is exactly 50%. The implied figures matter when you are comparing to a model output, not when you are placing a single moneyline bet.

The point of the sheet is to remove the conversion as friction in your decision-making, not to elevate it into a study. You should be looking at the line, knowing the implied probability inside a couple of seconds, comparing it to whatever your own probability estimate is, and either taking the price or skipping the bet. Anything that slows that sequence down — including spending too long on the conversion itself — is working against you. The conversion sheet is plumbing. The decision is the bet.

One sheet, every UFC card

You will use this conversion grid roughly twice every fight week for the rest of your UFC betting life. It is not glamorous. It does not produce any winners on its own. What it does is remove a friction point that quietly undermines clean decisions when you are tired, when the card is running late, when the in-play window is closing and you have ten seconds to act. Burn the thirteen anchor prices into your visual memory, keep the screenshot handy, and the conversion stops being a step.

Why don’t UFC implied probabilities at two UK bookies add up to 100%?

They sum to more than 100% because both sides of a two-way market include the bookmaker’s margin. The amount above 100% is the overround — typically 4 to 6% on a UFC pickem and 5 to 8% on a heavy favourite line. Strip the overround out by dividing each implied probability by the sum of all sides, and you get the operator’s true probability estimate without the vig.

Is American odds format ever shown to UK UFC bettors?

American odds (the +150 / -200 format) is available on most UK apps as a toggle option alongside fractional and decimal, but it is rarely the default for UFC markets and almost never appears in UK shop boards. UK bettors who watch US-based MMA broadcasts sometimes see American prices on the screen graphics, but the UKGC-licensed slip will resolve in fractional or decimal regardless of how the broadcast displays the line.
